Being somewhat new to reloading. I have loaded up some shells for my son's wsm 300. I used two different bullets. One was a hornady GMX 165 gr.

300 Winchester Short Magnum /.300 WSM (Using 200 GR Sierra Bullets) reloading data with 64 loads. Using bullets from Sierra SBT or HPBT MatchKing.

And the other was Nosler Patition 165 gr. Both bullets I used Hodgen H4831sc. The recipe, as I understand it, in the spear manual give a range of 68.5 to 72.5 Most of what I have loaded so far have been between 69 and 71gr.

As I checked some other sites, ie. Hodgon, I don't see a recipe for this powder and these bullets. Does anyone know, am I safe. Also, does anyone have a suggestion for loads and bullets for a wsm 300.

Most the hunts will be Mule Deer and Elk. Shots could be up to 400 yrds. Thanks for your feedback and help. Welcome to the forum. First, a couple of general warnings: Always start with the bottom load listed and not in the middle of the load range. Twice I've seen starting loads that were already at maximum for the individual gun used.

This is an artifact of fact the old pressure measuring instrument, the copper crusher, being able to err by as much as 25%. Other reasons are given by Western Powder (Ramshot and Accurate distributors) in their FAQ. It's the first item,. Second, the weight of a bullet is not enough to determine a safe charge. You also have to match the construction type.

The Hornady GMX bullet you listed is less dense than the lead core bullets more commonly used, so it will be longer than cup-and-core construction or even than some cast bullets the same weight. For a given COL, it will seat deeper down into the case, using up powder space and raising pressure. So you want load data recommended for it specifically. Email Hornady and they will send you that information free, or call them at 1-800-338-3220. No guarantee they will have your powder tested, but it's a start and you can compare their charges of other powders with that bullet to what's in your manual to get a percent reduction. I can tell you that QuickLOAD thinks GMX bullets will need about 2 grains less powder to reach the same pressure the Nosler Partition does.

Origin pro 8 serial key. The Speer bullets are generally lighter construction than the partition, so I'll have to cross check some load data there to verify a difference. Note also that just changing brands of bullet can also raise pressure sometimes due to difference in jacket thickness or core hardness, so you always go back to the lowest recommended starting load and work back up in increments no larger than 2% of maximum charge while watching for, when using a brand of bullet not used in the load data.

Hodgdon has no 165 grain bullet data using H4831SC, but they do have H4831 (should have the same charge weight) data for the next heavier bullet, the 168 grain MatchKing. That data should be workable with your Nosler Partition. It gives 69.5 grains as a maximum. So load three with 62.5, 63.9, 65.3, 66.7, 68.1, and 69.5 grains, and shoot from low to high, seeing if one groups better than the others, and checking for the pressure signs in the link above. OK, a little more: First, in comparing the Speer Manual #14 and the Nosler #6 manual, the IMR4831 and Winchester 760 and other powders that appear in both manuals for the.300 WSM, are mostly between 1.5 and 2.5 grains lower in the Nosler manual. So I would not assume the Speer load range is safe with the Nosler bullets.

Some differences: Speer uses Winchester cases and CCI primers. Nosler uses Winchester cases and Winchester WLRM primers. The WLRM primers are magnum primers, where Speer uses a CCI 200, a standard strength primer, with stick powders.

That warmer primer may account for some of the difference in powder charge weights in the two manuals. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. Lux thermostat manual 500. You just can't count on it, so you still need to work up from lower down.
