Multiple Microphones
Acoustic phase interference occurs when the same sound arrives at two or more adjacent microphones at different times. This happens, for example, when two microphones are placed on a lectern as in Fig. 16. Because they are spaced apart, sound from the subject will almost certainly arrive at the two microphones at different times. The curves in Fig. 17 show the effects of the destructive wave interferences this causes when the microphone outputs are mixed together. These response degradations can result in not only poor audio quality, but often feedback problems as well.

An obvious solution to this lectern-mic problem would be to use only one microphone. This not only improves the sound quality, but cuts the lectern microphone budget by approximately 50%! (Sometimes a second microphone may be desired as part of a backup or “redundancy” system, such as for press conferences. The two microphones should then be located directly in front of the subject, as close together as practical, and only one should be on or “open” at a time.)
Fig. 18 shows another approach to podium miking with two microphones. Here the two mics are placed with their capsules as close together as possible, and angled in a “crossfire.” This provides a wider overall acceptance angle, allows stereo miking with excellent mono compatibility, and largely avoids the phase interference problem.
Whenever two spaced microphones must be used, the “3:1 Ratio Rule” is a good guide for placement. Fig. 19 illustrates this rule of thumb. In the illustration, Microphone 1 is one foot from the sound source. The next closest microphone in the system, Microphone 2, should be located three feet or more from Microphone 1. If the distance between the sound source and Microphone 1 changes to two feet, then the minimum distance between the two microphones should be at least six feet, maintaining the 3:1 ratio.
Single Microphone Placement
Acoustic phase interference may also occur when only a single microphone is in use. This happens when sound is reflected off a nearby surface and arrives at the microphone slightly after the direct sound. Adding the two signals together may give problems similar to those encountered in improper multi-microphone setups. (The phase interference will be most noticeable when the reflected sound arrives at a sound pressure level that is within 9 dB of the direct sound.)
There are several ways to eliminate this problem. First, try putting the microphone closer to the sound source. Second, move the microphone farther from the reflective surface. Third, use a microphone specially configured to be placed extremely close to the reflective plane (Fig. 20). When using a low profile directional Audio-Technica boundary or “plate” microphone, for example, the microphone capsule is so close to the surface that the direct sound and the reflected sound arrive simultaneously and add together rather than cancel. This technique can prove very helpful on the apron of a stage, on a table or desk for conference use, or on the altar of a church.

Does anyone know if there are drivers or settings for the Audio-Technica AT2020USB+Im having trouble with it picking up my voice unless im basically kissing the thing.over a year ago i went through a series of mics that had the same problem (each tested on different pcs). I came across one, the CAD U1 that FINALLY picked up my voice from a foot or so away. BUT it always has a buzzing noise caused by the power supply. Im confident thats the problem as it went away when plugged into a laptop that wasnt plugged into the wall.SO My search resumed recently and came across the researched I Audio-Technica AT2020USB+. This time i researched for about a month before buying. No one seemed to have any issues with it that i came across.I've seen bloggers like Jared Shaw (Cynical) at thegamersjoint and Evan Abrams do blogs and their mic is a good distance aw, or even out of frame.help please.

The manual does go through the setup Windows 7 (not sure if Win10 is similar), is pretty straight forward, and does show how to set the levels in microphone properties so he 'should' be OK for the level setting. Mac OS X is also in the manual.

No drivers to be found on Audio Technica's site.- What OS are you using?- What DAW software are you using to record?- The AT2020USB+ has a headphone jack which allows direct moniyoring. Can you hear yourself with headphones?If using Win10, there was a recent update for privacy.

It disables mics unless the mic is enabled in the privacy setting. You do get something through the mic, so it may not be this. OS - Windows 10 - Ver. 1709 (Build 16299.431)DAW - I've tried Adobe Audition CC (up to date), Audacity, and Windows default voice recorder. I have the same problem with all programs.Headphone jack - I hadn't even thought to try that. I just now tried (I muted the levels in the PC while i did this) and it sounded AMAZING!!! When I get as far as I could with the CAD U1, it gets a bit hollow/echoe-e. But it definitely tells me its firmware/os related. Im confident it's not hardware since as I said, this problem has persisted with various mics over various machines.so. Any suggestions? Ya, I made sure to increase the levels higher. This does help. When I get into the 80s (which is kind of necessary) it sounds more like it's just forcing the output sound higher, making is a fake input increase.

Microphone driver

Idk how to explain it, but I don't like going to high because it doesn't sound like it's truly effecting the input sensitivity, but just forcing it to be louder, if that makes any sense. Ironically, I would think that would be the role of the 'Microphone Boost', which as you thought, I do not have.There is indeed a microphone option in privacy, but it is enabled.With the CAD U1, I didn't have to mess with the microiphone 'level' really. Plugged in, picked up great. But with the AT2020+, it's like I do have to force it by increasing the level to low 90s. Again, my apprehension about this is it doesnt seem to be a 'fix' but rather just turning up the volume setting type of thing.
